Shirley’s Vegetable Garden

By Shirley Barriger
February

Did you know that vegetables need flowers?

We grow them because they are pretty, which is usually why most people grow them.  When we plant flowers and herbs in our garden we create biodiversity.  Biodiversity simply means having many different plants and animals in an area.  A benefit of this mixing of plants is that pests have a hard time finding the plants they like to eat.  So a logical way to camouflage the crops in your vegetable garden and confuse the pest insects, is to mix them up!

The flowers and herbs you choose for your vegetable garden can attract beneficial insects.  These are the insects we want because they hunt and eat other insects that destroy vegetable plants.  There are beneficial beetles, flies, wasps and more.  Their pest-control power in the garden is amazing.

Flowers and herbs can intercept pests physically. Flying insects often ride the breezes and alight wherever they find a suitable plant to make into a meal.  By interrupting their flight path with an inedible item you may limit their access to your vegetable plants.

When we have beneficial insects standing by our gardens, we have to feed them because when they aren’t eating pests, they eat pollen, so flowering friends are very important.  A common flowering friend is the daisy.  The daisy is an excellent source of both pollen and nectar and they attract a wide variety of beneficial insects which include parasite wasps, hover flies, green lacewings, assassin bugs and lady beetles.  Other annuals are cosmos, marigolds, sunflowers, China asters, and dahlias.

I suggest you check out websites on companion gardening and organic gardening for a complete list of the different kinds of partnerships vegetables and flowers have.

A vegetable garden can be much more that just vegetables, when you include flowers and herbs.  It will be a garden that is attractive as well as productive, so do your homework.
