President's Challenge

Most of us aren’t complete couch potatoes. There are all things that we do either everyday or once in awhile that contribute to our activity level. Sometimes it’s easy to forget or keep track of just how much activity we really get in a day or a week.

The Presidential Champions Program shows ways for individuals to raise their activity levels and receive positive feedback for their efforts. Our Executive Director, Andy Mandell – Mr. Diabetes® is an Active Lifestyle Presidential Champion Gold Award recipient (quite a mouthful!). Andy has been able to attain this level of accomplishment by walking every day. But walking isn’t the only way to attain the award. The guidelines are simple.

Choose an activity.
Any physical activity that uses large muscle groups and burns energy count(s) toward achievement in the program. Running, playing golf, martial arts, dancing, even household chores all count toward the challenge. They're all on the list of activities. You can take the Challenge by yourself, or together with friends and family.

What Activities Count?
The President's Challenge lets you choose from almost 100 different activities. So you're sure to find at least one you like and one or two that you probably do everyday anyway.

President's Challenge Activities

2. Get active.
You'll earn points for every activity you log. Points are based on the amount of energy each activity burns. So, the more active you are, the more points you'll get. This program has a 750-point daily cap to encourage staying active every day. Earning a Bronze award takes 20,000 points. For example, if you run 5 miles every day, you can reach that amount in about six weeks. More moderate activities will take a little longer.

3. Track your activity.
The Challenge personal activity log, available at the website, makes it easy for individuals to track the time they spend on activities, right online. They can log time as often as they want in amounts as short as 5 minutes. Although time can't be logged for activities they haven’t done yet, they can go back up to 14 days to enter past activities.

4. Order your award.
When the goal is reached, the activity log will remind the individual that they've earned an award. It can be ordered online or by mail. Then they can continue on in the Presidential Champions program for a Silver or Gold award.

That's all there is to it. The only thing left is to sign up and pick the first activity.
They’ll give you a personal activity log to help track your progress along the way. There's even a special option for performance athletes and others who train at more advanced levels.

The goal is to see how many points you can earn by being active, and individuals will earn points for every activity logged. Points are based on the amount of energy each activity burns. So, the more active an individual is, the more points they'll get.

The first goal to aim for is a Bronze award and, then, keep going for a Silver or Gold.
