PomegranateDescription: A Full and rounded shaped fruit, with a flared, spiky crown with a tough leathery looking skin. Inside are packed inside are hundreds of ruby-red arils – sweet, tart, gem-like juice sacs, bursting with pure flavor.
Availability: September – January Facts: This fruit originated in tropical Asia but has been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Mentioned in Greek mythology and cited as the cause for the seasons. Spanish missionaries first brought the pomegranate to the United States. All pomegranates grown in the US come from California’s Central Valley. Serving Size = 1 medium fruit Selection: Pomegranates are picked ripe. Choose pomegranates heavy for their size without cracks or splits. The skin varies from medium red to deep red with a fresh leather-like appearance. Storage: They can be held at room temperature for reasonable periods of time, out of direct sun. For longer storage, refrigerate at 32˚-41˚ F. For home use, the whole fruit or seeds can be refrigerated in plastic bags or the seeds can be frozen separately.
