By Clarence HaynesWhen Life hands Clarence Haynes lemons, the 91-year-old slogan-quoting, card-carrying diabetic "Amigo" makes sugar-free lemonade.
After nearly dying upon diagnosis with diabetes in 1977--with an astronomical glucose level of 880--while on a trip to Boston, Clarence has since devoted the last 32 years of his life to diabetes education.
"With my second chance, I have been a role model to over 40,000 diabetics, and as a Lion Club member since 1972, I found a way to mentor to web members in areas high in diabetes information," said the self-proclaimed computer rookie, who has traveled all over delivering his message at information fairs.
"I try to be a role model, an "amigo" for older seniors, I tell them 'don't let age spoil your dreams,'" he added with a hearty laugh.
To further that life mandate, Haynes has founded the Blue Rose Diabetes Foundation of Canada, named, Haynes said for his quest to "attain the impossible." His hope is to fill in the gaps left by bigger organizations dedicated th the same cause, which focus mainly on the important task of researching a cure for diabetes.
