Cherries
Description: Deep red fleshy fruit (drupe) with a single seed
 
Availability: Fresh – early summer – Frozen and Canned year round
 
Facts: The name refers to both and fruit and the tree it comes from. Cherries are named after Cesarus, the Turkish town where they were first grown. Today Europe is the leading producer of this fruit, though Washington, California and Michigan are large US producers. Cherries can be sweet or sour, red or black.
 
Serving Size = 1/2 CUP
 
Selection: Select firm, red cherries with stems attached. Avoid soft, shriveled or blemished cherries.
 
Storage: Refrigerate for up to 10 days.
