On July 19, Defeat Diabetes Foundation Executive Director, Andrew P. Mandell, also known as Mr. Diabetes®, addressed the Southeast Region of the United Auto Workers (UAW) retiree delegation at their convention in Florida's Tampa Bay Area. 

 

These delegates represent 70,000 UAW retirees in this 9 state area.  The 1 1/2 hour talk directed attention to how these seniors can impact the diabetes epidemic in their own lives, as well as their immediate families and friends. Mr. Diabetes®, a senior himself, emphasized "We can prevent Type 2 diabetes almost 95% of the time. Understanding the risk factors is an important first step.”

 

“We also have an important role to play within our families, and among our peers, by promoting simple lifestyle modifications including: drinking fewer sugary beverages, regular physical activity, and eating more healthy foods,” Mandell added.
