Lipid-lowering Therapy Prevents Coronary Events in Diabetics

Lipid-lowering drug treatment significantly reduced the risk of major coronary events in patients with and without type 2 diabetes, and that patients with diabetes derived more benefit from lipid-lowering therapy as primary and secondary prevention.

A group of researchers led by Dr António Vaz Carneiro of the University of Lisbon School of Medicine, Portugal, evaluated the effects of lipid-lowering drug treatment in patients with and without diabetes. A meta-analysis was conducted that included 12 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials evaluating lipid-lowering drugs as primary or secondary prevention of major coronary events in patients with and without type 2 diabetes. Major coronary events included death due to coronary heart disease, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or myocardial revascularization procedures.

The researchers found that, in primary prevention, lipid-lowering therapy reduced the risk of major coronary events similarly in patients with diabetes (21%, 95% CI 11-30%; p<0.0001) and without diabetes (23%, 95% CI 12-33%; p=0.0003). In secondary prevention, similar risk reductions of 21% (95% CI 10-31%; p=0.0005) and 23% (95% CI 19-26%; p=0.00001) were found. After adjusting for baseline risk, however, patients with diabetes derived more benefit from lipid-lowering therapy as primary and secondary prevention than those without diabetes.

The researchers concluded that lipid-lowering drug treatment significantly reduced the risk of major coronary events in patients with and without type 2 diabetes, and that patients with diabetes derived more benefit from lipid-lowering therapy as primary and secondary prevention.
