Novo’s Inhaled Insulin Is Pulled From Further Research

Inhaled form of insulin fails to reach test goals, so Novo Nordisk A/S is pulling the plug.

Aradigm Corp., which is developing an inhaled form of insulin, said partner Novo Nordisk A/S is ending a study on the experimental treatment because it did not work as well as the injectable form. Shares fell as much as 37 percent. The AERx iDMS pulmonary-insulin treatment failed to reach goals of the study in Type-1 diabetics, which account for 5 percent to 10 percent of all diabetic patients in the United States. The trial was the final of three phases required for U.S. approval, Aradigm said Friday. Diabetes is a disease in which the body doesn't produce or properly use insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar and food into energy
