IPods Shown To Have No Effect On Pacemakers

(Defeat Diabetes® News) -- There has been a significant amount of talk and concern in recent years that portable mp3 players, such as iPods, could interfere with cardiac pacemakers. A recent study refutes this claim, concluding that ipods and other mp3 players are safe for those with pacemakers.

The study, led by Dr. Howard Bassen of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, tested the properties of four types of iPods: iPod shuffle, iPod nano, a fourth generation standard iPod, and an iPod with video. By measuring the magnetic fields produced by each model, and the induced voltages inside the pacemakers caused by each magnetic field, the study concluded that there is no significant impact on the pacemaker caused by the iPod.

The study was conducted using a 3-coil sensor, which measured the four iPods magnetic fields between 5 and 10 millimeters. At peak strength, the magnetic field strength was still "hundreds of times lower than the levels capable of interfering with a pacemaker."

This conclusive and sound study should lay to rest concerns that mp3 players pose a danger to those with pacemakers.
