Hypertension In Type 2's Independently Increase Heart Disease RiskPosted: Friday, February 01, 2008According to a report by investigators in Finland. hypertension and type 2 diabetes independently increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), and the combination of the two increases the risk "dramatically," especially in women. Dr. Gang Hu from University of Helsinki and colleagues evaluated the joint effects of different stages of hypertension and type 2 diabetes, at baseline and at follow-up, on the risk of CHD incidence and mortality in nearly 50,000 Finnish adults from 24 to 75 years old. Among men without a history of CHD or stroke, CHD incidence was increased by 22% for each 20-mm Hg increment in systolic blood pressure and by 18% for each 10-mm Hg increment in diastolic pressure, the authors report.
The increase in CHD was higher for women: 26% for a 20-mm Hg increase in systolic blood pressure and 23% for a 10-mm Hg increase in diastolic blood pressure.
CHD incidence was 23% higher in men and 104% higher in women who developed incident diabetes during follow-up, the researchers say. For those with a history of diabetes at baseline, CHD incidence was 90% and 270% higher in men and women, respectively. The combination of hypertension and type 2 diabetes increased the incidence of CHD as much as 3.65-fold in men and 8.66-fold in women, the report indicates, and the combination increased the risk of coronary mortality as much as 4.81-fold in men and 13.3-fold in women. "The results of our study have important implications for clinical practice," Dr. Hu said. "To reduce CHD risk it is necessary to consider carefully the treatment strategies based on the individual disease status, particularly for diabetes, both at baseline and during follow-up."
