Pomegranate Juice Helps Slow Prostate Cancer Recurrence

(Defeat Diabetes® News) -- Prostate cancer patients who drink pomegranate juice following surgery and treatment, appear to limit the likelihood of the disease recurring. This supports and extends past research that has suggested pomegranate juice and extracts as preventative agents for cancer, as well as other conditions.
Pomegranate juice, and derived extracts, contain high levels of antioxidant compounds, which help battle free radicals, and subsequent inflammatory and damaged cell properties. Because of these compounds, pomegranates have been suggested as useful natural preventative tools for a wide range of cancers (breast, prostate and colon, most notably), as well as heart disease and diabetes.
The current study followed 48 post-operative "localized" prostate cancer patients, who were identified as being at high risk for recurrence (through rising prostate-specific antigen [PSA] levels after surgery), for a six year period. It was found that for those "actively" on the study, meaning consuming pomegranate juice, while there PSA levels continued to rise in general, it was at a significantly slower rate than "non-active" participants, not drinking pomegranate juice. In other words, pomegranate juice was seen to slow the progression of potential prostate cancer recurrence.
Prostate cancer is known to have a high rate of recurrence, so this finding has direct application to the millions of men who suffer from this disease. "This study suggests that pomegranate juice may effectively slow the progression of prostate cancer after unsuccessful treatment," says Dr. Christopher Amling of the American Urological Association. More generally, this finding provides further evidence of the preventative properties of pomegranates, and perhaps other antioxidant rich consumables. Concludes Dr. Amling, "This finding and other ongoing research might one day reveal that pomegranate juice is an effective prostate cancer preventative agent as well."
