Diet Prevents Type 2 Diabetes

Posted: Friday, April 16, 2004

They found that those with a greater intake of vitamin E and alpha-tocopherol - one of the forms of vitamin E - were less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who consumed less of the powerful anti-oxidant.

There are eight forms of vitamin E of which alpha-tocopherol is the most useful to the body, as it circulates throughout the blood to reach all the body's tissue. Good sources of vitamin E include wheatgerm oil, soya bean oil, almonds, walnuts, cashew nuts, shrimps and brown rice.

Dr David Richardson, a specialist consultant in nutrition and food science, said: "Almonds are among the best food sources of vitamin E and are rich in a type of vitamin E known as alpha-tocopherol.

"As one of the best natural sources of vitamin E, almonds are a convenient way to contribute to a healthy diet."

Dr Frankie Phillips, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, described the research, published in the journal Diabetes Care, as 'exciting news'.
"Some other studies have found that more vitamin E in your blood seems to be associated with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes. "However we're not entirely certain of how this is happening, so we need more research to find out what the mechanisms are," she said.

Recent research by the University of Surrey found that patients with Type 2 diabetes who are obese could be wiping eight years off their life expectancy.
