Garlic is NOT Likely to Lower Cholesterol

Posted: Wednesday, April 11, 2007

Earlier evidence suggested that garlic modestly lowers cholesterol...but newer, better designed studies challenge this.

Many experts thought the controversy might be due to the type of garlic supplement used...or that raw garlic might work better.

But now a large NIH trial shows that even a clove a day of raw garlic DOESN'T lower any type of cholesterol.  Neither do equivalent doses of garlic powder (Garlicin) or aged garlic (Kyolic-100).

In fact, doses 2 to 3 times HIGHER than what is recommended on the package still don't help.  Don't recommend garlic or garlic supplements for cholesterol.

Keep in mind that some proponents will say that more than one clove a day might be effective...and that garlic might have other cardiovascular benefits.
