Vitamin D Supplement Beneficial for CV Health in Diabetic Patients

Posted: Monday, March 18, 2013

Israeli researchers at Wolfston Medical Center and Tel Aviv University conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled study of the benefit of once-a-day vitamin D 1000 IU in diabetic patients. Forty-seven type 2 diabetic patients were recruited and randomly divided into two groups of either taking a daily dose of 1000 IU vitamin D or a placebo for a year.

They compared the laboratory data of two groups and noticed that levels of adiponectin were higher in the vitamin D group compared with placebo group. According to the researchers, "Since adiponectin emerged as an important link between atherosclerosis and insulin resistance as well as an independent predictor of atherosclerotic vascular disease, the increase even marginal in circulating adiponectin levels during vitamin D supplementation as a potential mechanism of improved arterial stiffness may also be considered." However, a larger study is needed to establish the benefits of vitamin D supplementation on vascular health in diabetic patients.
