Blood Pressure in Diabetic Children Predicts Level Later in LifePosted: Tuesday, April 29, 2008Higher blood pressures in childhood correlated with higher levels in young adulthood, European researchers reported In a study of nearly 900 type 1 diabetics. In light of this finding, Dr. Ina Knerr, from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, and colleagues comment that "we need to focus on the diagnosis of hypertension in children with type 1 diabetes and to study the efficacy of early intervention." The 868 subjects, seen at 95 Diabetes Centers and Pediatric Care Clinics in Germany and Austria, were classified as prepubertal (ages 6.0 to 9.9 years), pubertal (10.0 to 15.9 years) or postpubertal (16.0 to 19.9 years). As reported in the April issue of Diabetes Care, 4% of prepubertal and 13.9% of postpubertal subjects had blood pressure values above the 97th percentile. Moreover, as blood pressure levels rose, so did HbA1c levels as well as the body mass index Z score. The results show that each standard deviation increase in childhood blood pressure correlated with 0.43 and 0.38 increases in adult systolic and diastolic blood pressure Z scores, respectively.
