New Study To Test Drug For Preventing DiabetesPosted: Thursday, February 19, 2004Dr. Ralph DeFronzo is a researcher at the Texas Diabetes Institute in San Antonio and he is directing a national study on a new diabetes drug researchers hope can prevent onset of the disease. He hopes to recruit 75 to 100 San Antonio-area people for the nationwide study. Previous studies suggest diabetes drugs can ward off the disease in some people. But some of the same studies also conclude lifestyle changes such as dieting and exercise are more effective at preventing diabetes. The San Antonio study will test the drug pioglitazone, which is one of several drugs that can make diabetics more sensitive to the insulin that their bodies naturally produce. Doctors have learned the medications can help save the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas that malfunction in diabetics. COMMENT: In the DPP (Diabetes Prevention Program) they used the insulin sensitizer Rezulin, but it was discontinued due to the side effects, so no long term results were ever able to be completed. It will not be surprising to see the same results as the DPP and that is that a change in exercise and diet will be always more effective than any drug and certainly less expensive. The drug manufacturer Takeda, which sells the drug under the brand name Actos, is sponsoring the research. Source: Diabetes In Control.com |
