Progress on the Artificial Pancreas

Initial studies of the artificial pancreas used only a partially automated system to monitor glucose levels and deliver appropriate doses of insulin.

The next stage has been to set up fully automated, closed-loop sessions in which all insulin calculations and delivery were done automatically, without direct intervention from either patients or researchers.

This study (152-OR), part of the JDRF Artificial Pancreas Project, looked at an advanced, customized controller that can make determinations about how much insulin is needed and when it should be delivered.

Additional studies on the closed-loop delivery systems looked at whether it could be used to reduce stress-related hyperglycemia (149-OR); whether using a low glucose "suspend" function (where insulin delivery would be temporarily stopped) in sensor-augmented pump therapy could prevent hypoglycemia in children (150-OR); the effectiveness of using a hybrid system as an alternative for standard, open-loop insulin pump therapy (151-OR); the effectiveness of day-and-night closed-loop insulin delivery on glucose control (153-OR); whether a closed-loop system utilizing sub-cutaneous glucose sensing and insulin delivery improves overnight glucose control following afternoon exercise in adolescents and young adults with type 1 (154-OR); the effectiveness of a safety system that automatically shuts down insulin delivery in case of predicted hypoglycemia (155-OR); and validation of the updated Yale Insulin Infusion Protocol (156-OR).
