Weight-Loss Medication Improves CholesterolPosted: Thursday, February 16, 2006F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, M.D., of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and colleagues studied the effectiveness and safety of rimonabant for long-term weight management in obese and high-risk overweight patients.
Researchers found, compared with the placebo group, patients receiving 20 milligrams of rimonabant produced greater than average reductions in weight, waist circumference, and level of triglycerides. The patients on rimonabant also had a greater increase in their levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or good cholesterol. "It must be acknowledged that the trial was limited by a high dropout rate and that long-term effects of the drug require further study. Still, our observations collectively suggest that rimonabant may well represent an innovative approach to the management of multiple cardiometabolic risk factors, facilitating and maintaining improvements through weight loss," study authors say.
