Sugar-Free Gum Limits Snack Cravings
By Daniel H. Rasolt
Posted: Sunday, April 19, 2009
(Defeat Diabetes® News) -- Chewing sugar-free gum in-between meals limits snack cravings, especially for sweets, according to a recent study. Energy levels were also seen to be maintained or enhanced in gum chewers. Study participants either chewed sugar-free gum in-between meals, or no gum at all. Those chewing gum were seen to have significantly reduced afternoon snack (between lunch and dinner) cravings. Specifically, chewers consumed 40 less calories in afternoon snacks, than non-chewers, and 60 less calories in sweet snacks. The chewers also reported having a decreased desire to eat, before consuming a snack. Since chewers were also observed to have either consistent, or enhanced energy levels, in between meals and with lessened snacking, this suggests that chewing sugar-free gum could be an effective form of weight control or loss. The diminished caloric intake, along with sufficient energy for exercise, would lead to weight loss.
