Mark Nov. 14 - First United Nations-Observed World Diabetes DayPosted: Wednesday, November 07, 2007As National Diabetes Month kicks off, the UN designated November 14 as World Diabetes Day to highlight the chronic disease and promote actions to strengthen public health and health care delivery systems. Blue lights will illuminate the Empire State Building, and a large blue circle (the global symbol for diabetes) will be formed on the UN Rose Garden lawn with blue umbrellas. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley will make a special proclamation for World Diabetes Day, and citizens around the world will celebrate by participating in 246-step walks to symbolically recognize the approximately 246 million people plagued by diabetes. What better time to empower diabetes patients and their families with critical information to manage their lives? “In the U.S. alone, tens of millions of people are afflicted with diabetes or pre-diabetes,” said Michael A. Weiss, former chair of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association, who has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for more than 20 years. But despite these overwhelming numbers, nothing has been published in the mainstream press to assist patients in the process of synthesizing the mountain of information related to the disease – until now. Over 200 events registered World Diabetes Day is celebrated globally. It brings together millions of people in over 195 countries to raise awareness of diabetes, including children and adults affected by diabetes, healthcare professionals, healthcare decision-makers and the media.
