Advantages Seen With Next New Inhaled InsulinPosted: Thursday, October 11, 2007New inhaled insulin shows less glucose excursions after meals then injected insulin. Authors explain that, Technosphere insulin is the first formulation that approaches the physiological early insulin release. Dr. Klaus Rave from the Profil Institute for Metabolic Research, Neuss, Germany and colleagues measured blood glucose excursions following a meal challenge after individual titration of either inhaled Technosphere insulin or injected regular human insulin during a 7-day treatment period in 16 patients with type 2 diabetes. After inhalation of Technosphere insulin, serum insulin concentration peaked at 15 minutes and declined thereafter, whereas serum insulin concentration peaked 120 minutes after injection of regular human insulin. The report indicated that the total absorption of insulin was nearly identical for the two treatments. Postprandial blood glucose was significantly lower 30 to 120 minutes after the start of the meal with Technosphere insulin than with subcutaneous regular human insulin. The blood glucose AUC in the 4 hours following Technosphere insulin was only about 52% of that following subcutaneous regular human insulin. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia occurred at similar rates with the two treatments. The researchers reported that , the results of the clinical experimental study support the utility of Technosphere insulin as an alternative to subcutaneous regular human insulin to cover postprandial insulin requirements," the authors conclude. The investigators added that, “Long-term studies are under way to confirm the promising efficacy, safety, and tolerability profile of Technosphere insulin seen in our study," Source: Diabetes In Control: Diabetes Care 2007;30:2307-2308 |
