Defeat Diabetes® E-Lerts™ NewsletterOctober 2008
(Volume VII, Issue IX)
Diabetes is a 24/7 disease. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and Self Management is playing a more important role than ever. Receiving mainstream recognition is Complementary and Alternative Medical Therapies.
The National Institutes of Health have created the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. They acknowledge, "Some people with diabetes use complementary or alternative therapies to treat diabetes. Although some of these therapies may be effective, others can be ineffective or even harmful. Patients who use complementary and alternative medicine need to let their health care providers know what they are doing." Read more

Chamomile Tea May Ward Off Diabetes Damage
Rats fed herbal extract showed significant decrease in blood sugar levels. Daily drinks of chamomile tea with meals may help prevent the complications of diabetes, report researchers in Japan and the United Kingdom. The findings are based on feeding chamomile extract to a group of diabetic rats for 21 days. Those on the chamomile supplement experience a significant decrease in blood glucose levels. The extract also appears to inhibit ALR2 enzymes and sorbitol, whose elevated levels are associated with increased diabetic complications. The researchers said they hoped their work leads to the development of a new chamomile-based drug for type 2 diabetes. ~ Diabetes In Control: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry Defeat Diabetes® News by Daniel Rasolt - Diabetes, Self-Management, Alternative Medicine

Confused about Long Term Care & Diabetes?
Most diabetics enter a nursing home due to diabetes related complications, such as amputations, blindness, kidney failure, heart conditions, etc., rather than the disease itself. These complications often require professional medical attention, and assistance, that is no longer viable at home, by family, caregivers, or friends, and is beyond their capacity to self-manage. Did you know? Depression in Elderly Diabetics Increases Death Risk
The combination of diabetes and depression in elderly individuals increases the likelihood of death, according to a recent study. This increased mortality rate might be due to depression causing poor lifestyle choices and lack of motivation for treating diabetes. ~ Daniel H. Rasolt, Defeat Diabetes® News MR.
