Alzheimer's could be a third form of diabetes. Insulin, it turns out, may be as important for the mind as it is for the body.
Levels of brain insulin and its related receptors are lower in individuals with Alzheimer's disease, a Northwestern study sheds light on the emerging idea of Alzheimer's being a "type 3" diabetes. Read more on these findings.

Cheap Pill 'Cuts Deaths From Diabetes: A combination pill consisting of perindopril and indapamide can save thousands of lives: Diabetic patients who were put on the combination drug Coversyl Plus were 18 per cent less likely to die from heart-related illnesses, according to the study, the largest of its kind. The results could have implications for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, the biggest killer of diabetics. The trial involved more than 11,000 people with Type 2 diabetes in 20 countries, including Britain. It concluded that the effects of adding the drug to their regime was so effective that all diabetic patients should be on it, whether they had hypertension or not. Lancet

90 Million Lack Health Insurance: One-third of people in the U.S. under 65 went without coverage for some or all of the last two years, reports Families USA, an advocacy group for the uninsured. The 89.6 million individuals identifying themselves as lacking insurance for at least a month, according to the advocacy group, was almost double the number of uninsured reported by the Census Bureau for 2006. More than 70% of those without insurance in part or all of 2006 and 2007 were employed full time, the report said. Half lacked insurance for nine months or more. According to the most recent census data, about 47 million people said they were uninsured in 2006. That figure comes from the Census Bureau's Current Population Survey, which is conducted yearly. Diabetes: Try green tea instead:
If you suffer from diabetes, drink plenty of green tea every day. It’s just as effective – and far safer – than the world’s leading anti-diabetes drug Avandia (rosiglitazone), which also increases the risk of heart attack by 43 per cent. The tea contains an antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is as effective as Avandia in those with moderate diabetes. It’s been tested against Avandia on a group of mice with diabetes, and the mice that were fed EGCG were just as able to tolerate sugar and produce insulin as the mice given Avandia. At the end of the 10-week trial, the green tea extract preserved insulin-producing tissue and gave other protective effects in the pancreas. The most powerful benefits have been among people who drink up to six cups of the tea every day. The new study, prepared by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. A mathematician and a physicist agree ...
A mathematician and a physicist agree to a psychological experiment.
The (hungry) mathematician is put in a chair in a large empty room and his favorite meal, perfectly prepared, is placed at the other end of the room. The psychologist explains, "You are to remain in your chair. Every minute, I will move your chair to a position halfway between its current location and the meal." The mathematician looks at the psychologist in disgust. "What? I'm not going to go through this. You know I'll never reach the food!" And he gets up and storms out. The psychologist ushers the physicist in. He explains the situation, and the physicist's eyes light up and he starts drooling. The psychologist is a bit confused. "Don't you realize that you'll never reach the food?" The physicist smiles and replies: "Of course! But I'll get close enough for all practical purposes!" New Diabetes Breath Test Monitors Glucose Levels :
Scientists say it may be possible to use a breath test to monitor blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. US researchers have discovered people with type 1 diabetes exhale higher levels of methyl nitrates when their blood sugar levels are too high. The team from the University of Irvine in California hope their work could replace the need for regular blood tests. This study shows the possibility of non-invasive methods that can help the millions who have this chronic disease The researchers used a chemical analysis technique developed to test for air pollution. Methyl nitrate concentrations were as much as 10 times higher in children with type 1 diabetes when they were in a hyperglycemic state, than when their blood sugar levels were normal. "More research will be needed to prove that breath-analysis testing can be an effective way of monitoring blood glucose (sugar) levels for people with diabetes." Most diabetics enter a nursing home due to diabetes related complications, such as amputations, blindness, kidney failure, heart conditions, etc., rather than the disease itself. These complications often require professional medical attention, and assistance, that is no longer viable at home, by family, caregivers, or friends, and is beyond their capacity to self-manage.
