Defeat Diabetes® E-Lerts™ Newsletter

June 2006
(Volume V, Issue 5)

It's Summer! Time for vacations, family, fun and common sense.

If you haven't been exercising, please check with your physician first. For both diet and exercise, go slowly; it has been proven to have longer lasting benefits.

Two of the best hints for starting out and staying on a program is to set reasonable goals and write down your food intake and exercise/activities every day. Just by doing that seems to motivate people.

A recent study presented at the ADA Scientific sessions showed that most patients reach their maximum post meal glucose 72 to 74 minutes after eating. This seems to indicate that current recommendations (Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes-2006, Diabetes Care) to measure postprandial glucose 2 hours after the start of the meal probably underestimate the peak glucose value in most patients treated with prandial short acting insulin analogues. This past month has been another VERY busy period of time.  I’ve been doing my walking, of course, but there have also been a few more Honors given me by means of Proclamations and meetings with people on the streets I walk.  Each time I receive a Proclamation I am totally humbled.  And, each person with whom I meet and talk, I am energized and re-enegized to continue on THE WALK™. It is here I can actually see in peoples faces that we, - me, Shirley and Russ (my Tour Managers) – are having a VERY positive impact on this insidious disease called diabetes.     Read More

MOVING THE DIABETES MOUNTAIN

We have a pandemic on our hands and where is the outrage?

The worldwide outbreak of diabetes has only just begun to hit. Our ability to manage the disease from a medical perspective is marginal. Sure, the professional community is working overtime to make a difference, yet managing the flood of impending new diagnoses, on top of the millions of people currently dealing with diabetes, will take every living person and most likely, generations to come. Did you know?
One of the main reasons for the rise of diabetes in the United States is the lack of physical activity and according to a recent report, only 25% of US public schools require students to take physical education class, down from 42% in 1991. In addition, many have canceled after-school activities at a time when they are needed the most.

Treatments on the Horizon
New Oral Insulin Shows Safety, Feasibility in Trials In the first human trials of oral insulin, the drug acted within 15 minutes and showed 60%-70% of the biopotency of injected insulin, without causing any adverse effects, researchers reported here at the 66th Scientific Sessions of the ADA.
A Skin Patch for Insulin Delivery The first results from an investigational transdermal insulin delivery system suggest that it is possible to deliver insulin through the skin.
New Groundbreaking Treatment for Diabetes Neuropathy a Success Injecting patients with a DNA-binding protein may prevent diabetes-related nerve damage - known as diabetic neuropathy - particularly to the hands and feet.
Discovery of Gene Plays Important Role in the Onset of Type 2 Diabetes In a painstaking set of experiments, scientists have discovered a gene that appears to play an important role in the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Mechanism For How The Pancreas Makes Insulin Is Crystalized "It is possible that the insulin deficiency happens when the crystals don't form properly and then part of the insulin that is produced gets destroyed."

Kevin's Tech Tips kevin
By Kevin McBride
June_2006
Kevin has brought us tips this month that the average user faces all the time.  I've already used them and they really work!

How to automatically log on to Windows XP
I often get questions from people asking how to bypass the Windows logon screen and have the computer automatically log on with their user account each time they boot up. Although this isn't recommended in a business or other shared computer environment, if you're the only person who has physical access to your system you may want to speed up the boot process by setting up auto logon.

Note that this won't work if the computer is a member of a domain (typically a business computer). Read More

How to automatically close non-responding programs
It can get old: a program hangs and stops responding, and you open up the Task Manager and click End Program (sometimes several times before the uncooperative program finally shuts down). Why not just have Windows close programs that quit responding so you won't have to? You can do it with a registry tweak. As usual, we recommend that you back up the registry before making any changes. Read More
