Insured losing access to healthcare: U.S. study: About 20 percent of the U.S. population delayed or were unable to get access to medical care when they needed it in 2007, up from 14 percent four years earlier, a study released on Thursday found. About 9.5 million more people went without medical care in 2007, compared with 2003, the nationally representative survey released by the Center for Studying Health System Change. In a striking finding, the survey said although those without insurance were more likely to report going without care, those with insurance had a greater percentage increase in unmet medical needs. Cost was the biggest obstacle to care for both the insured and the uninsured, the study said. For the insured, individuals said they were unable to get their health insurer to pay for treatment, or that a doctor or hospital would not accept their insurance. About 47 million people in the United States do not have health insurance, a number that has been climbing since 2000. Diabetes In Control

There Has Been a 15% Increase in Diabetes In Just 2 Years:  New government estimates show that nearly 24 million people, 8%  of the population in the United States have diabetes, an increase of more than 3 million in two years. The numbers are truly staggering, and the fact that the likelihood of developing diabetes increases with age makes it frightening to think of how many more will be affected over the next decade as the population of baby boomers enter a higher risk bracket for diabetes. Diabetes In Control

Confused about Long Term Care & Diabetes?
Most diabetics enter a nursing home due to diabetes related complications, such as amputations, blindness, kidney failure, heart conditions, etc., rather than the disease itself.  These complications often require professional medical attention, and assistance, that is no longer viable at home, by family, caregivers, or friends, and is beyond their capacity to self-manage.

MR. DIABETES® WAKE UP AND WALK® TOURtour
UPDATE :  June, 2008
LOCATION:  Delray Beach, Florida
TOTAL MILES:  9607.1
The MR. DIABETES® Walk Watch™ has begun!!  June is the second month of the Walk Watch™.  There are ONLY 550+/- miles to go to reach the finish in Madeira Beach, FL.  Madeira Beach is a small barrier island off the coast in the Gulf of Mexico, just outside of St. Petersburg.  Madeira Beach is where THE WALK™ began, December 1, 2000  with a  450 mile “Trial Walk” through Florida and right up to Pensacola (E. Milton), at the Alabama state line.
June was a very busy month.  I only walked just over 100 miles, but we expected and planned for the low mileage. By only walking 100+/- miles per month will allow me to meet the heavy and increasing requests for meetings with elected officials, business organizations and youth groups.  Then, add to that the fantastic media attention and the resulting increase in the number of people coming out to meet me and Tour Managers Shirley & Russ Barriger.  It’s all a matter of balancing our time. Rubberbands last longer when refrigerated.

By Dawn Swidorski, Public Outreach Director
July 2008

July is National Blueberry Month in the U.S. so it’s only fitting that we focus on one of three native fruits to North America. (Can you guess the other two? See answer below). They grow wild throughout the woods and mountainous regions in the United States and Canada. This fruit is rarely found growing in Europe and is called a bilberry and has only been recently introduced in Australia.

Blueberries are the fruit of a shrub that belongs to the heath family, which also includes the cranberry, azalea and rhododendron (which are well known for their perfusion of pink blossoms). In the US they still grow wild in abundance especially in the Northeastern part of the country.  Read more

Taking Care of Larger Pests
I am writing this month’s column while enjoying a couple weeks at home on my farm in Michigan (had a reunion & a wedding).  I got dirt under my fingernails last week helping our daughter plant a garden.  Our grandson Tyler also helped with the planting of tomatoes, cukes & squash plants.  He enjoyed watering the holes before the plants went in and afterwards.  Being away from the gardening scene for two years, I actually remembered how to get it done!  I do hope your gardens are doing well. Joke of the Month
Experiment

You enter the laboratory and see an experiment. How will you know which class is it?

If it's green and wiggles, it's biology.
If it stinks, it's chemistry.
If it doesn't work, it's physics.
