Defeat Diabetes® E-Lerts™ Newsletter

December 2007
(Volume VI, Issue XI)

It's the time when most of us are experiencing the pressures of the holiday season.  I've been reading numerous articles to find the best advice for all our readers on how to deal with all the stresses.

Each one had one point that was uniquely his/hers, but what evey article basically stated:
1.  Do everything (eating, shopping, visiting, etc.) in moderation.
2.  Take a deep breath.
3.  Take a step back.
4.  Don't take everything so seriously.
It sounds simplistic, but if you give yourself a chance to step back from a situation, it won't be so overwhelming.

We're presenting many articles you will find useful in your day-to day life:
Latest News - Self-Management - Risk of Diabetes Complications
Latest News - Self-Management - Tips to Save Your Health
Latest News - Effects of Drugs

Treatments on the HorizonA cure for diabetes?, new research on inflammation, the impact of a "diabetes" label and more are great research articles in this month's E-Lerts™.

Low carbs prevents macular degeneration (AMD):  Eating fewer refined carbohydrates may slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and ease the growing public health burden due to vision loss. People who consumed the most refined carbohydrates were 17 percent more likely to develop blinding AMD than those who consumed the least.  American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Oct, 2007

Diabetes to cause half of deaths in ten years:  Half of deaths will be caused by diabetes in ten years if no measures are taken. Experts said currently five percent of deaths were globally caused by diabetes. The death toll would rise to 50 percent if no measures were taken, they said. The death toll from diabetes would be 246 million in 10 years and 380 million after 20 years if no action is taken, they said. Eighty percent of diabetics were between 45 and 64 years of age, they said.  International Diabetes Federation, 2007 World Diabetes Day.

Confused about Long Term Care & Diabetes?

Most diabetics enter a nursing home due to diabetes related complications, such as amputations, blindness, kidney failure, heart conditions, etc., rather than the disease itself.  These complications often require professional medical attention, and assistance, that is no longer viable at home, by family, caregivers, or friends, and is beyond their capacity to self-manage.

UPDATE - November, 2007
LOCATION:  Atlanta, Georgia
TOTAL MILES:  8908.2
Well, folks, this UPDATE is going to a very short one.  It’s been a full month with lots going on, but it’s been quite repetitive. The media has been keeping me very busy.  Of course, you know that because I post all that activity on the Home Page of the website under WHAT’S NEW – at the top left.   Actually, go to it now and see what I’ve been up to lately, if you haven’t been there in a while. www.DefeatDiabetes.org

As far as the distance covered, it hasn’t been a record breaker.  But, the roadways I’ve been walking between Augusta and Atlanta (mostly Rte 278) have been extremely walker UNfriendly! I’ve been dodging traffic the entire way and the walking conditions have been quite untenable.  So, under these circumstances I am very pleased with the progress made. Read more

Lifesaving benefits of low-dose aspirin therapy maintained with naproxen sodium: Data shows that when over-the-counter (OTC) naproxen sodium, commercially sold as Aleve, was added to an aspirin therapy regimen, there was no change in platelet aggregation measures versus baseline. Unlike ibuprofen, which can negate the intended cardiovascular benefit of aspirin therapy, an OTC dose of naproxen sodium did not change the antiplatelet effect profile seen with aspirin therapy alone.  The FDA has recently mandated that ibuprofen products now carry a warning that there may be an interaction between ibuprofen and aspirin, which might render aspirin therapy less effective when used for its antiplatelet, cardioprotective effect.  Diabetes In Control

Know Your Fruits and Veggies: Pomegranates veggies
By Dawn Swidorski, Public Outreach Director
December 2007

This month I’m featuring a personal favorite and one that I’m guessing few of you have actually tackled: the Pomegranate. Locked inside the rough leathery exterior of the pomegranate is one of the most wonderful and bright flavors among all fruits. Each pomegranate contains hundreds of arils (juice sacs) that are brimming with antioxidants and a tiny little white seed. The seeds are small, not tough and provide some good fiber so feel free to eat up. Read more

Some Refrigerator Tips
Here are some tips for getting the best performance out of your refrigerator:
* Defrost freeze compartment whenever frost builds up to 1/4-inch thickness.
* Open and close doors quickly. Remove or return several items at once.
* Defrost frozen foods in the refrigerator. It's safer. Thawing items also absorb heat from other foods to reduce refrigerator running time.
* Keep condenser coils clean by regular vacuuming. Dust acts as an insulator that can cut down cooling efficiency.
* Replace worn door gaskets. Keep a good, tight door seal for best operating efficiency.
* Install your refrigerator away from the range, direct sunlight, registers, radiators, or any other heat source.
* Fill refrigerator to capacity for best operating efficiency, but do not overcrowd or block air circulation.

Storing Fresh Shellfish
* Live shellfish should be refrigerated in containers covered with clean, damp cloths—not airtight lids. Discard shellfish that die.
* Live mussels, oysters and clams may open their shells even in the refrigerator. Give them a tap. They will close if alive; if not, discard.
* Cook fresh shellfish within one to two days. Source: FMI

Winter Tips:  Storing Fresh Vegetables and Great Holiday Gifts

I hope you have had the rewards of a bountiful vegetable harvest to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  It is great to know that all the hard work has paid off and you can enjoy the good vegetables.

If you are storing fresh vegetables such as winter squash, potatoes, onions & root crops in a root cellar or a special area in your basement,  it is important to check on them every once in a while. Read more

Joke of the Month
Psychic
A man was not a believer in séances, but  went to one just to see what they were like. The psychic was doing his thing and grinning from ear to ear.

The man assumed his merriment was due to the fact that he was fooling a gullible public and gave him a poke in the nose. You can probably guess the rest...

The man was arrested for striking a happy medium...
