Confused about Long Term Care & Diabetes?

Most diabetics enter a nursing home due to diabetes related complications, such as amputations, blindness, kidney failure, heart conditions, etc., rather than the disease itself.  These complications often require professional medical attention, and assistance, that is no longer viable at home, by family, caregivers, or friends, and is beyond their capacity to self-manage.

New Studies and Clinical Research Trials Page
Many research facilities, drug manufacturers and universities are conducting studies and clinical trials for new drugs, behavioral habits and other investigational information with the goal of improving our health. They are seeking individuals to participate in these studies and trials.

DDF has been approached to list some of these studies and trials. Ones that are currently open:

Zephyr is conducting a series of clinical research studies of an investigational inhaled insulin. They need groups of people to take part in this study so we can determine how safe and effective inhaled insulin is compared with injected insulin for lowering blood glucose (sugar) in people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. advertisement Learn More about the open Zephyr studies.

Kevin's Tech Tips: Kevin McBride addresses a security issue and a computer hardware issue this month.

Treatments on the Horizon: Exciting new and promising discoveries including an insulin pill, a new diet pill that works, an anti-fat injection, a new gene discovery and more this month.

Check out our website, www.DefeatDiabetes.org, for Diabetes Support Groups, Recipe Archives, on-line Diabetes Screening Test, Warning Signs and much more. Vitamin C Offers Little Protection Against Colds: Unless you run marathons, you probably won’t get much protection from common colds by taking a daily supplemental dose of vitamin C, according to an updated review of 30 studies. Conducted over several decades and including more than 11,000 people who took daily doses of at least 200 milligrams, the review also shows that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) does little to reduce the length or severity of a cold, according to the researchers at the Australian National University and the University of Helsinki. However, they found that people exposed to periods of high stress — such as marathon runners, skiers and soldiers on sub-arctic exercises — were 50 percent less likely to catch a cold if they took a daily dose of vitamin C.  The Cochrane Library

Few Children Walk or Bike Even Short Distances to School:
Martin and colleagues studied a nationally representative sample of more than 7,000 children ages 9 to 15 and their parents. They found that almost 35 percent of these children lived within a mile of their schools. Children ages 11 to 13 were more likely to bike or walk than 9-year-olds, they found.  Martin SL, Lee SM, Lowry R. National prevalence and correlates of walking and bicycling to school. Joke of the Month
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire become a great writer.

When asked to define "great" he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"

He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.

Mr. Diabetes® Wake Up and Walk® Tour   tour
Update:  July, 2007
Location:  Rock Hill, South Carolina
Total:  8000.3  Miles

This has been a catch-up month, for me.  There are only 1700 miles more to walk to reach the finish – Madeira Beach, Florida.  So, I decided to take a block of time (six weeks) to organize the many aspects of THE WALK™ that have piled up during the last six years and to eliminate those items, which take up space, but are now not necessary.  For example, there have been all kinds of winter clothing that has been closeted, but will not be necessary to carry any more – no more northern winters.  Also, enormous amounts of paperwork that is critical to a functioning office has now been reviewed for pertinence and filed or tossed.  And, there are boxes of personal items that I wanted to have with me all these years, in order to preserve my ongoing interests and/or my sanity.  One hobby that comes to mind is a small piece of my comic book collection; still, hundreds of comics.   Read more

Reducing Salt in Processed Foods Can Save 150,000 Lives:
Just a 1.3-g/day reduction in sodium, translates into a 5-mm-Hg smaller rise in systolic blood pressure. Between the ages of 25 and 55 years, this small reduction would translate into an estimated 150 000 lives saved. There was a 55% increase in sodium intake in the US from the early 1970s to 2000.  The paper also notes that populations with an average sodium ingestion of less than 1400 mg/day have virtually no hypertension and show no progressive increase in blood pressure with age. In the US, average sodium consumption has been estimated to be 4000 mg/day per 2000 kcal, substantially higher than the 2300 mg/day recommended by the American Heart Association.    Arch Intern Med 2007; 167:1460-1468

Why We Eat What We Do

Why do we choose to eat the foods we eat? Here are three top reasons, according to a recent article in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association---the largest group of nutrition professionals in the world:

1. Taste is still considered the number one factor that affects our food choices. We are born with an innate taste for sweet, for example. When we allow ourselves frequent access to sweet foods, we literally feed this natural desire. Yet if we totally try to avoid sweet foods, our effort can backfire into an all-out binge.    Read more   Read Nutrition News Archives

As you are gardening, there will be times when you are bugged by insects and diseases.  No matter where your garden is located, they will search you out and do their best to destroy what they can.

Infected gardens and sick plants are discouraging, but they are not difficult to cope with if you are prepared to fight.   Read more    Read Shirley's Vegetable Garden Archives

Can I remove my user information from Windows Messenger?
QUESTION:
I used Windows Messenger on a Windows XP computer at work. I notice that when I logged on, my user name is now displayed in the list of Windows Messenger users. That was all well and good, but now I'm going to be sharing this computer with other people and I'd prefer that information not be there for them to see. Is there a way I can remove my user name from the list? Thanks. - Jordan P. Read more

Magic Pill to Eliminate Disease and Add Years to Life:
A molecular compound found in red wine called resveratrol extends the life span of mice by up to 24 percent and up to 59 percent in other animals like flies and fish. The premise behind a formulation of resveratrol is that it activates a gene called SIRT-1, which may regulate lifespan by being activated by caloric restriction. Mice live longer when they have 30 percent to 40 percent fewer calories than they would normally. Resveratrol may mimic caloric restriction. Diabetes In Control
