Certain Foods Linked to Long-term Weight GainMunching more unprocessed plant foods may help keep the middle-aged bulge away, a new study suggests. On the other hand, meat, french fries and sugar-sweetened drinks can help pack on the pounds. The findings suggest that the types of food you choose, not just calories, are important for avoiding age-related weight gain.
The Kid Initiative to Defeat Diabetes® (KIDD™) Curriculum
This generation of children is on the fast track to live a shorter, less healthy life span than their parents.
According to Connie Diekman, Director of University Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, "Nutrition education needs to start in prenatal classes and move through the entire education system…Many kids -- and their parents -- simply do not know what they ought to be eating."
The
Kid Initiative to Defeat Diabetes® Curriculum is designed to fill this gap in information about diabetes and obesity and its relationship to nutrition and fitness.

Know Your Fruits and Veggies™: Blueberries
By Dawn Swidorski, EMPA, Public Outreach Director
Blueberries are the fruit of a shrub that belongs to the heath family, which also includes the cranberry, azalea and rhododendron (which are well known for their perfusion of pink blossoms). In the US they still grow wild in abundance especially in the Northeastern part of the country.
Botanists estimate that blueberries have been around for more than 13,000 years. Native American cultures believed that blueberries were given to them by the Great Spirit to preserve them in times of scarcity and called them Star Berries.
