November 2012 (Volume XI, Issue XI)
Diabetes Awareness Month Calendar of Activities
Diabetes is a life-altering and life-threatening disease. People diagnosed are at greater risk for heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, amputations, as well as incurring serious financial and emotional hardship.
Knowing the risks, recognizing the warning signs, eating healthy and getting regular physical activity is critical to preventing diabetes and/or effectively managing the disease. Preventing or managing diabetes is also about taking personal responsibility and making small but lasting changes in diet and physical activity.
Also in this month's E-Lerts™ Newsletter:
Latest News - This month we highlight risks of airport full-body scans and diabetic eye disease and benefits of reducing A1c and regular glucose monitoring.

WHO estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
Islets of Humor™ By Theresa Garnero
First of all, a Sweet Potato is not actually a potato -- it’s a root not a tuber, so it isn’t even a distant cousin. It’s a member of the morning glory family. By the way, yams and sweet potatoes are not the same. True yams come from tropical and subtropical regions of the world and contain more starch and less sugar than sweet potatoes.
