Living With Kidney Disease
By Robert Brooks
March 2010

Kidney disease for me started when I was about ten years old.  I had a condition called Bladder Reflux.  In short, this is when your bladder allows urine to back up into the kidneys causing damage.  In my case this was irreparable damage.  So, at ten I was told that it was a matter of when, not if, my kidneys would fail.  As any ten year old, I had no idea what this meant so I just went on with my childhood.  I had periodic doctor’s appointments but, other then that, it didn’t affect me.  That is, until I was in College.  More

Be The Frog That Jumps

There were five frogs sitting on a log.  One decided to jump.  How many were left?
Still five.  Deciding to jump is not the same thing as jumping.  Deciding to start an exercise program is not the same thing as actually doing it.

Many people have good intentions, but they don’t take the action that’s necessary. More

Cardboard Tubes
Paper towel and toilet paper tubes aren't a throw away item. There are so many uses for them around your home.

1. If your tongs are always getting caught inside your drawer because they pop open, slip them inside a paper towel tube, it'll keep them closed and right where you want them.

2. Cut a slit along the length of a paper towel tube and slip it over the hanger to prevent creases in your pants. You can also slip them over the tops of a hanger to fill out the shoulders in a suit or jacket. Many more

Oprah's Outpouring: A Bittersweet Commentary on Responses to Her Diabetes Show
By Theresa Garnero, APRN, BC-ADM, MSN, CDE

On January 6, 2010, an Oprah producer consulted me about the upcoming show on diabetes. It was a thrill, but when I learned the show's premise (using complications caused by uncontrolled diabetes to motivate people into action), I suggested adding balance to the program by showcasing the diabetes care team and self-care behaviors so viewers would be left with tools and hope. Okay, so I didn't make the panel! More

March is National Kidney Awareness Month
As a diabetic I am fully aware of my risk(s) for developing Kidney disease.  The possibility of developing kidney disease for a diabetic is far greater than that of the non-diabetic.  That’s a fact – that’s our reality.  But, that doesn’t mean we resign ourselves to this unpleasant possibility becoming a reality.  NOT ON YOUR LIFE!  We can do a number of things to prevent it. And if that’s not possible, certainly delay it and minimize the full impact of this “inconvenient” condition. More

Know Your Fruits and Veggies™ - Artichokes
By Dawn Swidorski, Public Outreach Director
    March 2010

The first person to eat an artichoke was either brave or very hungry or both since their thorny nature can be a bit intimidating for the uninitiated.

The artichoke is an edible bud about 3–6 inches in diameter with many triangular shaped leaves formed around a center. The edible portion of the bud consists primarily of the fleshy lower portions of the leaves and the base, known as the "heart". At the center of the bud is the mass of immature florets in called the "choke." More

I received this from my good friend Claudette.  It is the first time in my life I HAVE TEARS IN MY EYES and it is her fault. All I am trying to do is reach as many as I can, and say "DON'T TRY TO MEET PEOPLE - JUST BE SOMEONE WORTH KNOWING." The Story of Blue Roses.

    Joke of the Month
    Delivery Problems
A new business was opening and one of the owners friends sent flowers for the occasion. but when the owner read the card with the flowers, it said, "Rest In Peace". The owner was a little peeved, and he called the florist to complain.

After he told the florist about the obvious mistake, the florist said, "Sir I`m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry, you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, "Congratulations On Your New Location". www.jokesgallery.com
