Healthcare Reform - What's Good for Diabetics?

There is so much confusion and misinformation about the Healthcare Reform Proposals. We must let our Elected Officials know what is important to us as Diabetics:
  • Prevention and Lifestyle Care Coverage
  • Preexisting Condition Coverage
  • Medication and Testing Supplies Coverage
With this kind of coverage, we could prevent Type 2 Diabetes and/or the complications. With this coverage, we would have proper Self-Management of the Disease, as people WOULD TEST AND TAKE THEIR MEDICATION BECAUSE THEY COULD AFFORD IT!

Read A Message From Our Executive Director for more on this subject.

A Message From Our Executive Director  director
Andrew P. Mandell – MR. DIABETES®

August 2009

If there ever was a time for all Americans to take stock of their lifestyles, that time is now.  We are in the midst of one of the greatest political battles in our 233 years of existence – healthcare.

So, the next question to ask ourselves is “what can I, as an individual, do about it”?  Well, the answer is PLENTY!! More

Know Your Fruits and Veggies™ - Tomatoes
By Dawn Swidorski, Public Outreach Director
August 2009
The perfect red ripe tomato – bursting with juices and rich flavor is the ultimate taste of summer.
Tomatoes are actually one of the 5 top vegetables eaten by Americans, though most of the time they are eaten cooked in ketchup, barbecue sauce or tomato sauce. Fortunately, cooking actually brings out one of the important antioxidants in tomatoes: lycopene. More

Clarence's Corner
By Clarence Haynes
When Life hands Clarence Haynes lemons, the 91-year-old slogan-quoting, card-carrying diabetic "Amigo" makes sugar-free lemonade.

After nearly dying upon diagnosis with diabetes in 1977--with an astronomical glucose level of 880--while on a trip to Boston, Clarence has since devoted the last 32 years of his life to diabetes education.

"With my second chance, I have been a role model to over 40,000 diabetics, and as a Lion Club member since 1972, I found a way to mentor to web members in areas high in diabetes information."

Shirley's Vegetable Garden
By Shirley Barriger
August 2009
Have you been eating vegetables from your garden lately?  The first vegetables I’ve been enjoying are leaf lettuce and spinach.  I was able to cut my leaf lettuce the morning after a rain so it was already washed.  Keeping it cut back will allow more lettuce to grow even if I can’t eat it all.

Find a friend who likes it and give it away.  My summer squash and zucchini are blooming and starting to produce. More
