Books You Can Use™Title: What to Eat Author: Marion Nestle Copyright date: 2006 General subject matter: Diet and Nutrition Special features: Charts, Extensive Footnotes, Index Available: Hardback and paper Price: 30.00 / 16.00 Publisher: North Point Press ISBN: 0-86547-704-3. It isn’t hard to be confused these days about what to eat – everywhere we are confronted with conflicting data from researchers – high fiber, whole grain, low fat, no fat, cholesterol free, brimming with antioxidants, Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers; add all the choices available at the grocery store and it’s little wonder that American’s eat more food than most other nations and are often malnourished and overweight at the same time. Nestle walks us through the supermarket aisle by aisle and provides information on organic vs. conventional produce, meat and dairy; wild vs. farm-raised fish; frozen vs. fresh; and provides facts on portion size, labeling and nutrition claims; supplements, additives and more. Even though it’s chocked full of information (some of it rather scary) she delivers it all in clear language and a common sense way that makes it an easy read. She also delves into the politics, marketing and money behind the food industry that will change all future trips to the grocery store and the way that you look at your food. The best take-away from the book is to eat products from the perimeter of the store. Think about how all the grocery stores are laid out: produce, dairy, meat is all at the perimeter of the store. The second you delve into the middle you are into heavily processed food that is of questionable benefit to you nutrition wise. This book is a must read for anyone who cares about what they eat and provides an excellent guide for how to evaluate the products available in your grocery store. Updated 2009 |
