Number of Patients with Diabetes Climbs to 24 Million

The prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. in 2007 was estimated at 23.6 million patients -- or 7.8% of the population -- an increase of three million cases since 2005, according to the CDC.
Patients 60 and older remained disproportionately affected, with the prevalence of the disease reaching 23.1% in that age group. In addition, the CDC said, 57 million patients had pre-diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) assertion that diabetics should consume no fewer than 130 mg of carbohydrates daily and 2. U.S. health officials are weighing tougher requirements for companies looking to launch new entries into the lucrative market for diabetes drugs. Following heart risk concerns with GlaxoSmithKline's pill Avandia, regulators will ask outside experts next week how much data should be gathered before and after approval about potential cardiovascular benefits or harms.
