Investigational Januvia (MSD) Put Through Its Paces for Diabetes

Researchers reported that, Januvia (sitagliptin), an investigational oral agent for type 2 diabetes, appears to be effective when given as a monotherapy or as an adjunct to Glucophage (metformin) or Actos (pioglitazone). FDA approval expected soon.

In the first human trials of oral insulin, the drug acted within 15 minutes and showed 60%-70% of the biopotency of injected insulin, without causing any adverse effects, researchers reported here at the 66th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association.

The study, which combined two therapies (anti-CD3 antibody and proinsulin peptide) already being tested individually in human clinical trials, produced better efficacy, longer-lasting results and fewer side effects in the preclinical trials in mice than either therapy has shown alone in the human studies. The researchers hope to begin testing the combination therapy in human clinical trials later this year.

The article nevertheless concludes that “current evidence suggests that Exubera is an alternative to short-acting subcutaneous insulin therapy providing a further choice for the treatment of patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes,” and that “a major benefit of Exubera…appears to be the improvement in patient treatment satisfaction which is related to its ease of use, leading to better adherence to treatment.”

Caution: the first week that Exubera is released, you will need to stay off the roads!
