Research into the biology of fat is turning up some surprising new insights about how obesity kills. The weight of the evidence: It's the toxic mischief of the flesh itself. A series of recent discoveries suggests that all fat-storage cells churn out a stew of hormones and other chemical messengers that fine-tune the body's energy balance. But when spewed in vast amounts by cells swollen to capacity with fat, they assault many organs in ways that are bad for health.

Duke Medical School is setting up a course in treating obesity, saying that with nearly two thirds of Americans overweight, doctors need specialized knowledge of the condition. Coursework will include the underlying causes of obesity and how to treat it.

Eighty percent of people are overweight when they are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so this research is very worrying. The researchers found that the average age of death for type 2 subjects with a BMI of 35 or greater was 70 years old, while the average for those with a BMI of 20-24 was 78 years old.

Taxpayers picked up half the cost of treating health problems caused by the U.S. obesity epidemic which reached an estimated $75 billion last year.That conclusion, which is described by the study's lead author as "conservative," would mean that Americans spend almost as much on obesity-related health care services as they do to treat the illnesses caused by cigarette smoking.

Obesity and weight gain are important risk factors for the development of diabetes and can significantly influence the outcome for those already diagnosed with the disease. Obesity is also a known risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD), which is responsible for 70% to 80% of deaths in diabetics.
