Inhaled Steroids Linked to Risk of Diabetes

The use of inhaled corticosteroids, whether for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), increases the likelihood of diabetes onset and diabetes progression. Current use of inhaled corticosteroids was associated with a significant 34% increase in the rate of diabetes.

Lung impairment similar to that found in smokers has been found in a study that included 3,182 patients with diabetes and 27,080 control subjects. Researchers found that diabetes can damage the lungs in ways that are similar to smokers.
