Researchers have discovered why patients with diabetes develop a condition which leads to amputation of the lower limbs.

It is caused by an alteration in their skin tissue before leg ulcers develop. The best way to prevent an ulcer complication is to lower the patient's blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol. The problem is the condition is often undetected at its early stages. So, effective treatment can sometimes arrive too late.

A study led by researchers at the Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center and Microcirculation Laboratory finds that early changes in the oxygenation of the skin could help foretell the development of ulcerations and enable doctors to treat patients at an earlier stage, before the onset of serious complications.
