A1c Predicts Success of Amputation in Diabetics

In diabetic patients being evaluated for lower extremity amputation, a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) value greater than 10% strongly suggests that a transmetatarsal amputation (TMA) will fail and that a below-knee amputation (BKA) will be required, new research shows. Conversely, values below 7% usually predict success.


New Degree Available Due To Increase in Diabetes Amputees

A new bachelor’s degree program in orthothics and prosthetics is being offered in 4 schools.
The courses on devices supporting the spine or extremities and on artificial limbs often lead to highly paid jobs as baby boomers age.

As baby boomers age, and more diabetes is being diagnosed, the need for artificial limbs is expected to increase, creating more of a demand for the degree.




New Optimism For Patients Suffering From Numbness

Everyday I see patients that complain of only one thing, pain in their hands and feet.
