Fat Cell Hormone Increases Metabolism And Causes Weight Loss
Posted: Thursday, April 29, 2004
Adiponectin rapidly decreases blood glucose and lipids, while burning fat, beneficial in the treatment of diabetes and heart disease associated with obesity.

In contrast to leptin, a related hormone, adiponectin can cause weight loss by raising metabolic rate while not affecting appetite. This finding may have future implications in understanding and treating obesity and metabolic disorders like diabetes,

ERI Patents Treatments For Insulin Resistance In Diabetes Accompanying Obesity
Posted: Thursday, April 22, 2004
Type II diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, preventing it from storing glucose. Because melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) causes the pancreas to secrete glucagon, MSH must be present for type II diabetes to develop. The new process,is for treatment of diabetes by administering an antagonist of MSH.

Previous treatments for type II diabetes have focused on altering the amount of glucose in the bloodstream Brennan and Hochgeschwender instead focused on regulating insulin resistance in genetically engineered mice by manipulating the amount of MSH in the bloodstream.

Relationship Between Obesity-Associated Diabetes And Heart Disease Pinpointed
Posted: Saturday, April 10, 2004
A major link between obesity and insulin resistance is a high level of free fatty acids, which cause insulin resistance and seem to simultaneously set off inflammation, which can be the missing link to heart disease.

Obesity Takes 8 Years Off Diabetics' Life Expectancy

Eighty percent of people are overweight when they are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so this research is very worrying. Waist Circumference, Not BMI, Explains Obesity-Related Health Risk
Posted: Wednesday, March 10, 2004
When WC and BMI were used as continuous variables in the same regression model, WC alone was a significant predictor of comorbidity.

Leptin, The Answer to America's Obese Problem??
Posted: Thursday, February 19, 2004
New study found that leptin gene therapy caused a 26% loss of body weight. Increasing leptin, a protein involved in regulating body weight, in laboratory animals transforms fat-storing cells into unique fat-burning cells, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas report. They speculate that these findings could provide "a quick and safe solution" to the obesity problem in humans.

Could Obesity Be All In The Mind?
Posted: Monday, February 09, 2004
Scientists at the Universities of Edinburgh and Newcastle-upon-Tyne are about to embark on one of the biggest studies of its kind into the role the brain plays in making people fat. The theory behind it is that many people fail to lose weight, not because they cannot stop eating, but because the brain will not let them do so.

Diseases Linked to Obesity and Insulin Resistance: Obesity: Building A Program For Success
Posted: Saturday, December 27, 2003
Incentives need to be built into each patients program individually and something they can relate to. Part of the challenge in tackling this recidivistic clientele is overcoming boredom. Try doing this by offering varied menu choices when making suggestions.

Study Finds Diabetes Increase Among College-Age People
Posted: Tuesday, December 16, 2003
While diabetes was once rare for people less than 50 years old, a recent study has found the disease affects more young people. Researchers have found a 70 percent increase in obesity of people ages 18 to 29 over the last decade, a major factor in the diabetes increase among young people. Tuncer says college students are at risk because alcohol use, weight gain and physical inactivity all contribute to obesity and diabetes.
