Diabetes Complications Swelling U.S. Health Costs

Poorly managed type 2 diabetes costs the U.S. health system an extra $22.9 billion a year. Those costs come from direct medical costs to treat heart, eye, kidney and other serious health problems associated with the disease, diabetes groups reported at a meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Aspirin resistance is more common among diabetics patients than nondiabetics, potentially requiring higher doses then Low-Dose asprin for adequate protection against a heart attack, researchers said. Resistance to low-dose aspirin recommended for cardioprotection was found among 13% to 37% of patients with diabetes but only 3% to 14% of nondiabetic patients with a history of coronary artery disease.
