Data for Atkins & South Beach Dieters on Insulin Resistance, Obesity and the Fiber Connection
Posted: Wednesday, September 22, 2004
Insulin sensitivity may be more directly related to loss of intramyocellular or omental fat rather than loss of total body weight.

New Beta Cells Form in Response to Insulin Resistance
Posted: Wednesday, September 22, 2004
Our paper clearly demonstrates a potential mechanism for beta-cell growth during insulin resistance, which in turn, occurs as a normal protective response to delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in obese and other susceptible individuals,"

High-fiber Cereal Cuts Excess Insulin Production
Posted: Tuesday, June 22, 2004
People in danger of developing type 2 diabetes often have high levels of insulin; because they are "insulin resistant," glucose is not processed properly and the pancreas compensates by producing more insulin.
Dietary fiber can help to prevent hyperinsulinemia -- and ward off diabetes.

ERI Patents Treatments For Insulin Resistance In Diabetes Accompanying Obesity
Posted: Thursday, April 22, 2004
Type II diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, preventing it from storing glucose. Because melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) causes the pancreas to secrete glucagon, MSH must be present for type II diabetes to develop. The new process,is for treatment of diabetes by administering an antagonist of MSH.

Previous treatments for type II diabetes have focused on altering the amount of glucose in the bloodstream Brennan and Hochgeschwender instead focused on regulating insulin resistance in genetically engineered mice by manipulating the amount of MSH in the bloodstream.

Pre-Diabetes Increases Colon Cancer Risk
Posted: Friday, April 16, 2004
As people get fatter, their bodies begin to resist the effects of insulin. To compensate, their pancreases make more and more of the sugar-lowering stuff. Ma and colleagues now show that people whose bodies make the most insulin because of insulin resistance have the highest risk of colon cancer.

New Method To Reduce Insulin Resistance
Posted: Saturday, April 10, 2004
A new method to reduce insulin resistance that could lead to potential treatments for diabetes accompanying obesity has been patented.Because melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) causes the pancreas to secrete glucagon, MSH must be present for type II diabetes to developThe new process, is for treatment of diabetes by administering an antagonist of MSH. melanocyte-stimulating hormone.

Relationship Between Obesity-Associated Diabetes And Heart Disease Pinpointed
Posted: Saturday, April 10, 2004
A major link between obesity and insulin resistance is a high level of free fatty acids, which cause insulin resistance and seem to simultaneously set off inflammation, which can be the missing link to heart disease.

Increased Risk For Impaired Glucose Tolerance and Metabolic Syndrome For Relatives of Type 2 Diabetics
Posted: Thursday, March 18, 2004
A high proportion of first-degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes will develop impaired or diabetic glucose tolerance in association with multiple other metabolic syndrome characteristics

New Research Suggests Lower Chromium Levels Linked to Increase Risk of Diabetes and CVD
Posted: Wednesday, March 10, 2004
New data was announced, suggesting that high levels of chromium in the body are associated with a lower prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in men.
