Breath Test Possible Diagnostic Screening Tool for Diabetes

Abnormal glucose tolerance can be detected by a carbon-13 labeled oral glucose tolerance test in which 13-CO2 excreted in the breath is measured with a standard breath analyzer, according to research conducted at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

Cancer, the world's No. 2 killer, is even more lethal for people with diabetes, U.S. researchers said last week. People with diabetes who get cancer are about 40 percent more likely to die in the years following the diagnosis than cancer patients who are not diabetics.

Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been closely linked in several respects, but little solid quantification of the risk diabetes poses to cardiovascular mortality has been achieved. A recent study has made a profound discovery, that in the long-term, mortality due to cardiovascular events (heart attacks and strokes), is equally likely for diabetics with no previous cardiovascular disease history, as it is for individuals with known cardiovascular disease (and non-diabetic). The study was conducted solely on males, but the results are suspected to extend to both sexes.
