Primary- and secondary-prevention patients who consistently take their statin medication have a significantly lower risk of death than those who do not adhere to therapy, a new study has shown [1]. Individuals who took their medication at least 90% of the time had a 45% reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality, compared with less adherent patients, report investigators.

Pfizer Inc announced that, in patients with heart disease, type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) 80 mg significantly reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke, by 35 percent over those taking Lipitor 10mg.

In elderly patients with documented coronary heart disease (CHD), statins reduce all-cause mortality, as well as CHD mortality, nonfatal myocardial infarction, the need for revascularization, and stroke, a new review has shown. Investigators say that the magnitude of benefit, with statins reducing all-cause mortality 22%, is larger than previously estimated.
