Newer Diabetic Meds Cost More, But Users Have Fewer Hospital Visits

A new study suggests that patients on the newer medications had a slightly lower risk of hospitalization because of diabetes-related complications. They also spent between $920 and $1,760 less on annual total healthcare costs. Diabetics who were prescribed newer medications to control their illness were more likely to take these drugs as instructed.


Water Retention With Pioglitazone Causes Weight Gain

Up to 75 percent of the increase in body weight that can occur in patients with type 2 diabetes who are treated with pioglitazone is from water retention but the drug also tends to reduce abdominal fat and blood pressure.
