New Target for Preventing Type 1 Diabetes
Posted: Wednesday, September 09, 2009
|
The study of the role of an enzyme called 12-Lipoxygenase (12-LO), may find the answer to preventing the destruction of the beta-cells and could be a vital step in preventing Type 1 diabetes.

MRI Can Evaluate Beta-Cell Mass
Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2009
|
Noninvasive imaging (MRI) may aid physicians in the early diagnosis, staging and treatment of diabetes, according to a study performed at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

A Step Closer to Regenerating Beta Cells
Posted: Wednesday, July 22, 2009
|
US scientists have come a step closer to finding a way to help treat people with diabetes by reactivating their own insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. They discovered a hitherto unknown role for a well known protein: it helps immature endocrine systems generate new pancreatic islet cells, which include the insulin-producing beta cells.

Exenatide Improves Beta-Cell Function Compared with Insulin Glargine
Posted: Wednesday, June 03, 2009
|
Over a 1-year period, treatment with exenatide improved beta-cell function significantly more, and led to greater weight loss, than did insulin glargine, in a study of patients with Type 2 diabetes who had previously been treated with metformin.

Why Diabetics Over-Produce Sugar in the Liver
Posted: Sunday, May 24, 2009
|
Type 2 diabetics often suffer from an over-production of sugar within the liver, a response to falling blood glucose levels. This potentially dangerous mechanism was poorly understood until recently, when researchers uncovered the role that a certain "master regulator" plays in sugar production within the liver.

Scientists Create Potential Preventative Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes
Posted: Tuesday, May 12, 2009
|
Scientists believe they may have found a preventative therapy for Type 1 diabetes, by making the body's killer immune cells tolerate the insulin-producing cells they would normally attack and destroy, prior to disease onset.

Discovery of a New Receptor Antagonist Predicts Diabetes 2 Onset
Posted: Wednesday, April 15, 2009
|
Elevated levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), a natural inhibitor of interleukin-1 beta, precedes the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Protein Induces Beta Cell Regeneration to Induce Insulin Production
Posted: Saturday, January 17, 2009
|
Insulin injections are the primary form of treatment and management for type 1 diabetics, due to an inability to produce normal levels of insulin. Researchers have recently discovered a way to induce insulin production, potentially in type 1 diabetics, through the regeneration of pancreatic beta cells.

New Non-invasive Technology Can View And Track Cells
Posted: Thursday, August 28, 2008
|
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) isn't just for capturing detailed images of the body's anatomy. Thanks to novel imaging reagents and technology, MRI can be used to visualize with "exquisite" specificity - cell populations of interest in the living body.

Rotavirus Might Accelerate Type 1 Diabetes Development
Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2008
|
A recent study out of Australia has found a connection between the common childhood infection, rotavirus, and the onset and progression of type 1 diabetes.
