An FDA panel voted 10-2 that the investigational diabetes drug saxagliptin (Onglyza) does not put Type 2 diabetes patients at an increased risk for cardiovascular events, but wants drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb to conduct long-term postmarketing studies to test the drug in older and sicker patients.

Two New Diabetes Drugs could be Approved by April 2nd

A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel will review two proposed drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes this April. According to a meeting notice posted on the FDA's website Monday, the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee will discuss Bristol-Myers Squibb's saxagliptin tablets on April 1 and Novo Nordisk.'s liraglutide injection on April 2.

FDA Announces New Recommendations on Evaluating Cardiovascular Risk in Drugs Intended to Treat Type 2 Diabetes

The FDA recommended that manufacturers developing new drugs and biologics for Type 2 diabetes provide evidence that the therapy will not increase the risk of such cardiovascular events as a heart attack. The recommendation is part of a new guidance for industry that applies to all diabetes drugs currently under development.

A common procedure to treat cystic fibrosis (CF), in which a specific type of sugar is inhaled into the lungs, might lead to dangerous complications, especially for diabetics. A bacteria, known as burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc), appears to create further mucus buildup for CF patients as a result of this procedure, and has been labeled a "superbug."

Self-Donated Stem Cells Help Diabetics

Autologous stem cell (ASC) infusions appear to greatly improve glycemic control in diabetics. The benefits of the procedure were further enhanced through hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment, before and after. The findings give some promise to a disease (specifically, type 2 diabetes) that is a growing worldwide problem, and has no known cure.
