Gene Found That Plays a Role in Type 1 Diabetes
Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2009
The researchers propose that the development of Type 1 diabetes may in part be due to increased levels of this new gene.

Diabetes Risk Linked to Sex Hormone Protein
Posted: Wednesday, August 12, 2009
A new study found that people with low blood levels of a protein that regulates sex hormones are at higher risk of diabetes, and genetics may play a role in determining both the levels and the risk.

Scientific Peer Review of Research Applications for the Department of Defense - Andrew P. Mandell
Posted: Thursday, August 06, 2009
Diabetes advocate, Andrew P. Mandell, MR. DIABETES® and Executive Director of Defeat Diabetes Foundation, Inc., recently participated in the evaluation of research proposals submitted to the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) sponsored by the Department of Defense.

Diabetes Gene Raises Odds of Lower Birth Weight
Posted: Wednesday, August 05, 2009
Pediatric researchers have found that a gene previously shown to be involved in the development of Type 2 diabetes also predisposes children to having a lower birth weight.

Discovery of Genetic Switch Finds a Possible Cure for Type 1 Diabetes
Posted: Wednesday, July 22, 2009
Scientists have identified a master regulator gene for early embryonic development of the pancreas and other organs, putting researchers closer to coaxing stem cells into pancreatic cells as a possible cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Gene Inhibition Helps to Normalize Type 2 Diabetes
Posted: Tuesday, June 30, 2009
In research that could lead to new approaches for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, a research team has found that suppressing a liver enzyme that induces glucose production helped diminish the symptoms of the disease — reducing blood glucose concentrations, decreasing rates of glucose production in the liver, and improving insulin sensitivity.

Genetic Link Between Heart Disease and Gum Disease Found
Posted: Wednesday, June 10, 2009
A genetic link between gum disease (periodontitis) and heart disease has been discovered by German scientists. This could be an important finding for those with diabetes because of the increased risk of heart disease to gum disease The association between periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CHD) has been known for years, but a genetic link between the conditions hadn't been confirmed. The University of Kiel team found that the two diseases share a genetic variant on chromosome 9.

Possible Links Between Alzheimer's and Diabetes
Posted: Saturday, May 16, 2009
Both type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease are more prevalent with advanced age, and many possible links between the two may exist. Most notably, results of lifestyle choices, such as unhealthy and excessive food intake, may increase the risk of both conditions, but more specific links appear to exist as well. These connections were explored in a recent meta-analysis of 14 previous studies.

Discovery of a New Receptor Antagonist Predicts Diabetes 2 Onset
Posted: Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Elevated levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), a natural inhibitor of interleukin-1 beta, precedes the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Obesity Strongly Linked to Insulin Processing
Posted: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Obesity, itself thought to be a major cause of insulin resistance, in fact appears to result from distinct insulin processing as well. A recent study has concluded that differences in insulin processing within cells are responsible for variations in how fat is stored within these cells, potentially leading to obesity.
