National Eye Institute (NEI)

One of the heartbreaking complications of diabetes can be blindness. As one of the Federal government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), the NEI conducts and supports research that helps prevent and treat eye diseases and other disorders of vision. This research leads to sight-saving treatments, reduces visual impairment and blindness, and improves the quality of life for people of all ages.

American Foundation for the Blind

The American Foundation for the Blind—the organization to which Helen Keller devoted her life—is a national nonprofit whose mission is to ensure that the ten million Americans who are blind or visually impaired enjoy the same rights and opportunities as other citizens.

The American Foundation for the Blind promotes wide-ranging, systemic change by addressing the most critical issues facing the growing blind and visually impaired population—employment, independent living, literacy, and technology. They also provide a list of very helpful links for adaptive and assistive technology and information about learning to live with diminished vision.

LightHouse for the Blind

The LightHouse promotes the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired through rehabilitation training and relevant services, such as access to employment, education, government, information, recreation, transportation and the environment. They also assist those with recent vision loss to adapt to their new circumstances. Many provide online stores for the purchase of adaptive or assistive devices, such as talking calculators, large print books, Braille watches and other items. There are local chapters in many cities throughout the United States.
