Defeat Diabetes Foundation's Executive Director, Andrew P. Mandell -- Mr. Diabetes®, was recognized by the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League as a "Lightning Community Hero" during the first period of tonight's game against the St. Louis Blues.

"It is an honor to be recognized for my work on diabetes prevention, and exciting to be selected as a Lightning Community Hero," said Mandell, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program.

"One of every three children will get diabetes in their lifetime if we don't do something to stop it. This generation is on the fast track to live a shorter and less healthy life than their parents. This award will allow us to give kids in the Tampa Bay Area the tools they need to develop healthy life habits and, then, to stay healthy," Mandell continued.

Diabetes is a life-altering and life-threatening disease. People diagnosed with the disease are at greater risk for heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, amputations, as well as incurring serious financial and emotional hardship.

Knowing the risks, recognizing the warning signs, pursuing healthier eating habits and doing regular physical exercise is critical to preventing diabetes or effectively managing the disease.

Mandell concluded, "What's worse than finding out you have diabetes? Not finding out! Together we can -- Defeat Diabetes®."
