Vending Machines in SchoolsAmerican children spend approximately six hours each day in school. While at school, many children eat breakfast and lunch, as well as one to two snacks. Children consume an estimated 35% to 50% of their calories during the school day through school meals, as well as foods and beverages sold through vending machines, a la carte in the cafeteria, school stores, and other venues such as fundraising events. One of the factors impacting kid's nutrition is the availability of low nutritional value foods from vending machines and canteens in schools. According to the National Automatic Merchandising Association, in 2004, Americans spent more than $21 billion buying food and beverages from the vending machines. The CDC reported in
2006, 33 percent of elementary schools, 71 percent of middle schools and 89
percent of high schools either had a vending machine or a school store,
canteen, or snack bar where students could purchase foods or beverages in
competition with the school meals program. Below are documents and information which outline the importance of getting rid of unhealthy snacks and beverages in our schools.
